I have just found a conn 22b trumpet for sale locally and have received the serial number but have not been able to figure it out. The numbers are 5 (with a long space) then 611 294. If anyone could give me some info or advice regarding the serial number and the horn itself. It would be much appreciated. Thanks ps He is asking 165 for it, good price or rip off? |
Conn Trumpet Serial Numbers
For the current Conn Brass Serial Number list, see: Current Conn Brass Serial Number List This page contains a list of Conn serial numbers for brass instruments. That includes cornets, trumpets, horns, trombones, euphoniums and basses. View the manufacturing date ranges on serial numbers for many of our legendary brands. This is a Conn 5H tenor trombone (serial number 233011). This instrument is 92 years old. This horn was built during a time when it was common to play in 'high pitch' and Conn developed several models which were convertible from low to high pitch so that players could use the same horn whenever.

The 'Conn 22B' that you saw is a *student* level trumpet with a .459 bore made within the last 10 years according to the serial number list at
http://www.xs4all.nl/~cderksen/ConnSerialsConnBrass.html
They are *completely* different instruments from the vintage *professional* level Conn 22B's with .438 bore made 1920's through 1960's.
'Don't confuse the 22B New York Symphony/Victor with the current 22B Director. That is an entirely different instrument, a student model. The vintage 22B was a top class instrument.'

A present-day student Conn 22B Director is similar to a student Yamaha 2320 or a student Bach 300.
$165 is a good price for it if it is in very good condition, similar to what you'd pay for a good condition Yamaha 2320 or Bach 300, as long as you understand that you are getting a student-level trumpet rather than a professional level vintage 22B.
Many eBay sellers fail to mention the '4' or '5' that is at the beginning of the serial number because they do not realize that it is part of the serial number due to that long space before the rest of the numbers.
They end up citing a serial number that sounds like that of a vintage 22B from the 1950's-1960's and so the buyer thinks that he is getting a vintage professional 22B but a modern student trumpet arrives in the mail instead.
